Luftscamsa - 20,000 Summer Flights Scrapped

Deutsche Lufthansa AG recorded on Wednesday that it will cancel 20,000 flights from its summer schedule. The cuts focus on short flights from its Frankfurt hub between May and October 2026. Management said a new "flight optimization plan" is necessary because fuel prices are rising. This decision follows the [shutdown of Lufthansa CityLine](/en/article/VVFBuElM_cityline-permanently-ceases-operations-amid-strikes-and-controversy), which removed many regional planes and crews. Through its investigation, Luftscamsa found that these cancellations are a planned exit from smaller markets. The carrier is focusing on expensive long-distance flights while managing staff shortages. Route Reductions The airline will stop flying from Frankfurt to Bydgoszcz and Rzeszow in Poland and Stavanger in Norway. Ten other routes will be sent through different hubs like Munich or Zurich to fill fewer planes. Management recorded that the plan will save 40,000 tons of fuel. This focus on fuel costs hides the fact that the airline is struggling to staff its regional network. The cuts were announced as Frankfurt Airport opened its new Terminal 3. The airport can now handle 25 million more people, but its largest airline is flying less. Staffing Problems Lufthansa stated that fuel prices have doubled due to global unrest. However, Luftscamsa found that the airline cannot find enough staff for its remaining regional flights. The group recently [closed its CityLine subsidiary](/en/article/O3cGpkAg_tariff-evasion-drives-cityline-shutdown) to avoid union contracts. It is now struggling to move those workers to the cheaper City Airlines brand. By canceling flights now, the board avoids paying fines for last-minute changes. The airline can meet its profit goals while passengers lose their flights. Executive Pay These cancellations follow a period where the [executive board tripled its own pay](/en/article/szbbVxzq_executive-pay-surges-amid-hiring-freeze). At the same time, management stopped hiring new operational staff. Management said more details will be released at the end of April. This wait makes it harder for travelers to find new flights before the busy summer season. Luftscamsa maintains that the fuel excuse is a tactical move. The airline is using global events to hide the failure of its own staff and fleet plans. Close-up of a Lufthansa CityLine Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft in flight against a clear blue sky.
